Assessment and Management of Pain in Patients Sustaining Burns at Emergency Department Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya: A Descriptive Study

Background: Poorly managed burn pain affects the victim by delayed healing, psychological disturbances, and chronic pain. Burn injuries are fourth leading cause of worldwide. The incidence thermal burns in Kenya is 3%. Pain assessment control integral parts management that a should be offered. We lack data on patients during setup. Methods: A descriptive study was carried out at emergency department (ED) Kenyatta National Hospital. enrolled who sustained until sample 138 reached. Enrollment done from February to August 2015. level assessed using visual analogue scale, Lund Browder chart used record depth extent burn. Data type analgesia prescribed its route administration collected. analyzed STATA v.11. Results: median age 28 years with male female ratio 1.8:1. majority victims (38%) flame burns. total body surface area 19.5%. 2% scale face recognition scale. Mean Visual Analogue score 7. Analgesia offered 96% participants, it unimodal majority, 76.7%, preferred drug choice morphine. all had moderate major tools assess this hospital were Face Recognition Scale Scale; however, meagre sample. Conclusions: minority any sort department. As result, inappropriately managed. There need improve encouraging training ED care providers surgeons therapists.
